Ayase Ueda gave Japan the lead after 28 minutes in Tokyo’s New National Stadium. It didn’t last for long, though, with New Zealand’s Benjamin Old scoring the equaliser just four minutes later. It was not until midway through the second half that the hosts finally restored their lead, with captain Ritsu Doan (Eintracht Frankfurt) scoring in the 71st minute to seal the win.

Satoshi Tanaka played in the closing stages for Japan after replacing Kodai Sano in the 87th minute, bringing a positive end to the international break for the 24-year-old. After featuring against Venezuela (28/9), this was Tanaka’s second appearance of this round of international fixtures, and his third cap in total for Japan.
