13 Schalke players called-up for international duty

In the first international break of the season, 13 Schalke players will be off playing for their respective countries. The UEFA Nations League begins in the international break, with a number of players making their bow in the competition. Qualifying for the African Cup of Nations is also on the agenda for some players.

Länderspiele

Yehven Konoplaynka and Ukraine have been drawn in League B of the UEFA Nations League along with Czech Republic and Slovakia. They will travel to the Czech Republic on Thursday September 9th, before hosting Slovakia in Lviv three days later. Alessandro Schöpf and Guido Burgstaller’s Austria are also in League B, where they have been drawn in a group with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Northern Ireland. They will face Sweden in a friendly on Thursday, before taking on Bosnia on Tuesday 11th.

Highlight for Breel Embolo

Switzerland and Breel Embolo are in League A of the Nations League, where they will face the Republic of Ireland on Saturday 8th September. Their other opponents will be Belgium, although they will play England in Leicester in a friendly on Tuesday September 11th.

The African nations also have important upcoming fixtures, with the second round of qualifying games for the African Cup of Nations 2019 on the cards. Amine Harit and Hamza Mendyl will be hoping to gain their first points with Morocco when they take on Malawi in Casablanca on Saturday. Nabil Bentaleb’s Algeria already have three points to their name, and will travel to Gambia for their second game. Salif Sané is in the same boat with Senegal, who also have an away game, for them at Madagascar.

McKennie against the record world champions

The US national team have two prestigious opponents for their upcoming friendlies. On Saturday evening Weston McKennie will face record world champions Brazil, ahead of a match with Mexico four days later.

Germany U21s will face Mexico’s U21s on Friday in Fürth, with Alex Nübel, Cedric Teuchert and Suat Serdar hoping to be involved in Stefan Kuntz’s team, ahead of the European Championship qualifier with the Republic of Ireland the following Tuesday. Benjamin Goller will hope to make his debut for the Germany U20s, after being nominated by coach Meikel Schönweitz for the first time. The game is against the Czech Republic on Friday.
