Alessandro Schöpf secures victory for Austria

Alessandro Schöpf was the hero for Austria in the friendly against World Cup hosts Russia on Wednesday (30.05.). The midfielder scored the game’s only goal with a penalty in the 28th minute to hand Austria, who failed to qualify for the tournament, a 1-0 win.

It was the 24-year-old’s third goal for his country. Schöpf almost bagged his fourth in the 37th minute, yet his effort missed by a whisker. After an hour or so, the right-footer was replaced by David Alaba and was met with a huge round of applause around the stadium.

Guido Burgstaller, the second Knappe in the Austria team, played the entirety of the second half. The striker came on for Köln’s new signing, Louis Schaub.

First Germany, then Brazil

On Saturday (2.06.) Austria face the German team with the likes of Leon Goretzka. Kick-off is at 18:00 CEST in the Wörthersee Stadion in Klagenfurt. To cap of the series of international friendlies, Burgstaller, Schöpf and co. line up against record World-Cup winners Brazil on Sunday (10.06.) at 16:00 CEST.
