Argentina took control from the outset in front of 70,649 spectators at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas and had an early opportunity to open the scoring. Egyptian referee Amin Mohamed Omar awarded a penalty following a foul on Lautaro Martinez, but Lionel Messi sent his spot-kick narrowly wide of the goal (9’).

Austria put up a good fight against the reigning world champions, but fell behind shortly before half time. Messi found the net from 16 yards to make it 1-0, moving ahead of Miroslav Klose as the leading goalscorer in World Cup history. Klose scored 16 goals in the competition during his career.

Ralf Rangnick’s side continued to battle after the break, but Messi struck again in added time to seal Argentina’s 2-0 victory (90’+5). Two wins from two have secured Argentina’s place in the round of 32 with a game to spare. Austria have three points following their opening 2-0 victory over Jordan and can join Argentina in the next round by securing at least a point against Algeria in their final group game on Sunday (28/6, 04:00 CEST).
