Schalke’s international players went unbeaten with their countries on Saturday night, here’s a break-down of how they got on.

Breel Embolo Schweiz

A rout for Embolo and Switzerland

Breel Embolo got off to the perfect start in the UEFA Nations League with Switzerland. The Swiss beat Iceland 6-0 in their opening game, putting them above Belgium and top of Group A2. Embolo started in an attack that proved to be too much for the opposition, breaching the Iceland defence after just 13 minutes. The goals were scored by Steven Zuber (13’), Denis Zakaria (23’), Xherdan Shaqiri (53’), Haris Seferovic (67’), Albian Ajeti (71’), and Admir Mehmedi (82’). Embolo was on the pitch for 65 minutes before being substituted by Vladimir Petkovic. Switzerland’s next game is a friendly against England on Tuesday evening.

Bentaleb and Algeria on track

Algeria earned an important point against Gambia in their bid to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Nabil Bentaleb played the full 90 minutes as his country went top of their group with four points after four games. The match kicked off 90 minutes late due to too many fans turning up at the ground, and there were few chances once the game eventually got going. Algeria were the team on top, and went 1-0 up through Baghdad Bounedjah (47’). Gambia equalised almost immediately, however, with Assan Ceesay’s goal (49’) meaning the points were shared.

Elsewhere in the Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco beat Malawi 3-0. The goals were scored by Hakim Ziyech (3’) and Youssef En-Nesyri (42’, 78’), with Amine Harit and Hamza Mendyl on the bench.
