Breel Embolo is Last 16 bound

Breel Embolo played 90 minutes of Switzerland’s 2-2 draw with Costa Rica on Wednesday and provided the assist for his team’s opening goal. The point was enough for Embolo and Co. to book their place in the knockout stages, finishing second in Group E behind five times world champions Brazil.

In the 31st minute of Wednesday night’s game in Nischni Nowgorod, Schalke’s Breel Embolo headed down a cross brilliantly to assist Blerim Dzemailis in scoring the opening goal. After Kendall Waston equalised eleven minutes into the second half, Josip Drmic’s goal in the 88th minute looked to be the winner, but Costa Rica managed to find their second equaliser from the penalty spot.

Switzerland will now face Sweden in the Last 16 on the 3rd July at 16:00 (CEST).

Leon Goretzka plays 63 minutes

It was a very different story for the Germany national team earlier in the day: Joachim Löw’s men were beaten 2-0 by South Korea and will be heading home much earlier than expected. Both goals were scored in stoppage time by Kim Young Gwon and Heung Min Son, meaning Germany finished bottom of Group F.

Leon Goretzka started for Germany, making his debut on a historic night for the national team – Germany were eliminated in the group stage of a World Cup for the first time. The midfield man, whose contract at Bayern München starts on the 1st July, played 63 minutes.
