Breel Embolo and Switzerland hold Brazil to a draw

Breel Embolo and the Switzerland national team frustrated five-time World Cup winners Brazil on Sunday night. Thanks to a courageous performance and a bit of luck, the Swiss were able to hold their Group E opponents from South America to a 1-1 draw. Schalke’s Breel Embolo was brought on in the 80th minute.

In the first half, Switzerland showed Brazil a little too much respect, which soon took its toll: 20 minutes in, Philippe Coutinho’s shot from 20-yards opened scoring via the inside of the right post. It was a dream goal for the Brazilian which Yann Sommer in goal for Switzerland had no chance of saving.

Vladimir Petkovic’s men showed a lot more courage after the half-time break and Steven Zuber headed in the equaliser on the 50-minute mark. Despite continued and uninterrupted pressure from the Brazilians and a hectic final few minutes, Switzerland battled hard to keep the score at 1-1 and pick up the point: a fair result, largely down to the fighting spirit of the Swiss, whose next game on Friday is against Serbia.

Earlier in the day, Germany’s opener was much less successful. Leon Goretzka did not feature in the DFB Team’s 1-0 defeat to Mexico, which has now piled the pressure on the defending champions for their second group game against Sweden on Saturday at 20:00 CEST.
