Burgstaller scores off the bench, Konoplayanka bags brace

Burgstaller saves Austria

After beginning their European Championship qualification campaign with a two defeats, Austria were feeling the pressure coming into their third game as they faced Slovenia. The Austrians dominated the game in front of 19,000 fans in Klagenfurt, but were unable to find the back of the net. Guido Burgstaller replaced Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer in the 71st minute and took just 90 seconds to make his mark, as he fired his country ahead in the 74th minute. After Marko Arnautovic forced Jan Oblak into an impressive save, Burgstaller was on hand to turn home the rebound from close range.

Following the 1-0 victory, the Austrians occupy fourth place in Group G. On Monday (10/06, kickoff 20:45 CEST), Burgstaller and his teammates will host North Macedonia, who currently sit in third.

Konoplayanka double in convincing win

Yehven Konoplyanka also had reason to celebrate on Friday, as his Ukraine defeated Serbia 5-0 in Lviv. The 29 year old had a large hand in the victory as he got on the scoresheet twice. After a brace from Viktor Tsygankov (26’, 28’), Konoplyanka netted the third from the right hand side shortly after half time (46’). Roman Yaremchuk scored the fourth in the 59th minute before Konoplyanka rounded off the game with his second and Ukraine’s fifth in the 75th minute, as he beat defenders on the counter attack and fired home from 16 yards.

After last night’s victory, Ukraine remain in pole position in Group B. After three matches, Andriy Shevchenko have picked up seven points. On Monday (10/06, kickoff 20:45 CEST), Ukraine will face second-placed Luxembourg.
