Cedric Teuchert on target as U21s win 3-0
With Alexander Nübel and Cedric Teuchert in the starting XI, the Germany U21s took another step towards the 2019 European Championship finals in Italy and San Marino with a 3-0 win against Israel on Thursday evening.
The DFB youth team wasted no time in their European Championship qualifier with Israel, taking the lead early on through Nuremberg’s Eduard Löwen. Schalke’s Cedric Teuchert added a second in the 26th minute: the January signing provided a clean finish after being played through by Mahmoud Dahoud. Levin Öztunali rounded things off from the penalty spot with a third goal just seconds before the full-time whistle.
Like Teuchert, Nübel was out to impress and did exactly that, playing the full 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet with a number of top saves. DFB coach Stefan Kuntz had also named Thilo Kehrer in his squad, but an eye injury ruled the defender out of their qualifier on Thursday.
Six games in and the German youngsters sit at the top of Group 5 with 15 points. Their next qualifier will take place on Tuesday at 19:00 CET in Mitrovica against Kosovo.
Emphatic win for Nabil Bentaleb
Nabil Bentaleb put in an impressive performance for Algeria in their 4-1 win against Tanzania. Schalke’s number 10 started for the Algerian national team and played for 60 minutes.
Algeria, who made it to the Last 16 of the 2014 World Cup but missed out on a place at this summer’s tournament will now face Iran at 18:00 CET on Tuesday. The game will be played in Graz, Austria.
