Ibrahima Cissé and Mali off to a winning start at the U23 Africa Cup of Nations

Mali, with Schalke defender Ibrahima Cissé in their ranks, enjoyed a successful start to their U23 Africa Cup of Nations campaign. They beat Gabon 3-1 in their first group game on Sunday (25/6).

The 22-year-old centre-back played the full 90 minutes in Tanger in Morocco. Mali’s goals were scored by Mamadou Sangaré (20’), Cheickna Doumbia (41’) and Alhassane Tamboura (90’+2). Gabon actually took the lead through Emmanuel Ovono in the third minute, but lost their goalkeeper Francois Junior Bekale to a red card in first-half injury time.

Mali’s next game is against Egypt on Wednesday (28/6), with their final group match set for Saturday (1/7) against Niger.
