Late drama auf Schalke: England scrape through against spirited Slovakia

A late wondergoal and a Harry Kane header secured a 2-1 victory for England at the Arena AufSchalke in the EURO 2024 round of 16.

Gelsenkirchen played host to one of the European Championship’s most dramatic matches so far on Sunday night, as Gareth Southgate’s England team rescued victory from the jaws of defeat to see themselves through to the quarter-finals of this year’s tournament.

Ivan Schranz put Slovakia in front after 25 minutes, and the score remained 1-0 until deep into stoppage time, when an acrobatic finish from Jude Bellingham sent the game into extra time – and the England fans into raptures. The rejuvenated Three Lions found their winner moments after the restart. Substitute Ivan Toney headed the ball across the box, and captain Harry Kane turned the ball in to win it for his side.

Last night’s clash was the fourth and final game to take place at the Arena AufSchalke this summer. For England, meanwhile, a meeting with Switzerland awaits. That match is set to kick off at 18:00 on Saturday in Düsseldorf.

Gelsenkirchen’s EURO 2024 results at a glance:

  • Serbia 0-1 England
  • Spain 1-0 Italy
  • Georgia 2-0 Portugal
  • England 2-1 Slovakia (AET)
