Five former Schalke players to return to the VELTINS-Arena with Germany

Malick Thiaw will be back in Gelsenkirchen on Tuesday (20/6) with the German national team for their friendly against Colombia. Kick off at the VELTINS-Arena is at 20:45 CEST. As well as the 21-year-old defender, who joined AC Milan last summer, three former Schalke players in Leon Goretzka, Thilo Kehrer and Leroy Sané are also in Germany’s squad, while Ilkay Gündogan also spent time with the club’s academy.

Malick Thiaw made his Germany debut in their 1-0 defeat in Poland last Friday (16/6). The defender started the game and almost scored too late on. He is now looking forward to the fixture at the VELTINS-Arena. “I’m really excited to be back auf Schalke, this will be a really special game for me. I’ve got lots of memories of my time there,” said Thiaw in an interview with dfb.de. “My family and friends will also be there in the stands.”

The game against the South Americans will be the 11th international match to be played at the VELTINS-Arena. Germany last visited Gelsenkirchen in November 2018, when they hosted the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League.
