Reiss Nelson, on loan from FC Arsenal to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, scored from the spot in the 11th minute to make it 1-0 for the Young Lions. Wolfsburg’s Josip Brekalo scored the equaliser just before half-time (39’). A few minutes into the second half, James Maddison broke the deadlock (48’). Croatia drew level again through Nikola Vlasic (62’), before Jonjoe Kenny scored a spectacular goal from 25 metres out eight minutes later. But, it wasn’t enough to bring England their first win at the U21 Euros, as Josip Brekalo scored his second of the match in the 82nd minute to make the final score 3-3.

After picking up two losses in their first two games, both teams knew that they would not be moving on to the semifinals. Instead, their other two opponents in the group—Romania and France—moved on to the next round. Romania will face Germany on Thursday (18:00 CEST) while France will face Spain later that night (21:00 CEST). After moving on to the semifinals, these four teams have also qualified for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
