Itakura played the full 90 minutes in Sydney. Japan’s goals came late on, both by Kaoru Mitoma (89’, 90+4’). This win now means that Japan will finish in the top two of their qualification group. Australia, on the other hand, will have to settle for third place, meaning they will play the side who finished third in the other Asian qualifying group for the right to take on the team that came fifth in the CONMEBOL group. This game will played at a neutral venue in June.

Japan’s last qualifier is on Tuesday (29/3) at home to Vietnam in Saitama at 12:35 CET.
