Markus Schubert becomes U21 European Champion with Germany

Germany U21s lifted the European Championship trophy on Sunday night (06/06), with Lukas Nmecha scoring the only goal of the game. Goalkeeper Markus Schubert, who has spent the season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, was a member of the squad.

Germany won the European U21 Championship for a third time on Sunday (06/06) after previous successes in 2009 and 2017. Lukas Nmecha scored the only goal of the game in the 49th minute as Stefan Kuntz’s side overcame Portugal 1-0. Goalkeeper Markus Schubert, who has spent the season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, was a part of the squad, while centre back Malick Thiaw was involved in the group stage phase of the tournament for Germany in March.

Schöpf and Rönnow unused

Sunday also saw Austria and Denmark play their final friendlies ahead of the EURO 2020 tournament. While Austria drew 0-0 with Slovakia at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna, Denmark defeated Bosnia & Herzegovina 2-0 in Brøndby thanks to goals from Martin Braithwait (18’) and Andreas Cornelius (73’). Schalke pair Alessandro Schöpf and Frederik Rönnow were not called upon in either of their respective games.

Austria kick of their EURO campaign on Sunday (13/06) against North Macedonia, while Denmark take on Finland a day earlier.
