Markus Schubert starts in Germany U21s win

Germany U21s started the new season with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Greece. New Schalke keeper Markus Schubert started for Stefan Kuntz’s side, playing the first half in the friendly win.

The goalkeeper was taken off at half time, along with all other ten Germany players. Wolfsburg striker Lukas Nmecha gave Germany the lead in Zwickau (25’), before Niklas Dorsch of 1. FC Heidenheim doubled the scoreline (58’). Schubert & Co. had a man advantage for almost an hour as Alexandros Katranis was sent off in the 37th minute for the visitors.

It was a positive start for Kuntz’s men, especially considering only three of the players that were finished runners-up at the U21 Euros in the summer are still available for selection. The rest of the squad, including Alexander Nübel and Suat Serdar, are now too old to play for the U21s.

Their first competitive game will be on Tuesday (10/9, 20:00 CEST) in Wales.
