McKennie starts as captain but USA lose in the Gold Cup final

The USA national team were the defending champions but fell at the final hurdle in the defence of their title. On Monday night, Weston McKennie’s team lost 1-0 in the Gold Cup final against Mexico. In front of a packed crowd of 62,493 in Chicago, Schalke’s midfield dynamo started as captain for his country for the first time in his career.

On McKennie’s debut as captain, Jonathan dos Santos’ goal proved the difference. The former Barcelona and Villarreal man, who now plies his trade at LA Galaxy, scored the winner for Mexico in the 73rd minute. “Over 90 minutes, they were clearly the better team,” US head coach Gregg Berhalter admitted. “We started the game well but we lacked composure.”

Added frustration for McKennie’s men came from the fact that it was just the second goal the USA had conceded in the whole of the Gold Cup. On the way to the final of the tournament which includes countries from both North and Central America as well as from the Caribbean, Berhalter’s side had won five games out of five, scoring 15 and conceding just once. McKennie scored two of those 15 goals.
