Nations League: Alessandro Schöpf is the matchwinner

It was a good night for the Royal Blues in the Nations League on Wednesday (14/10). Alessandro Schöpf scored the winning goal for Austria, whilst Rabbi Matondo’s Wales kept their place at the top of the table.

Alessandro Schöpf

Austria beat Romania 1-0 in Ploiești, and the man of the moment was Alessandro Schöpf. After good work by David Alaba and Christoph Baumgartner, the midfielder sent a low shot into the bottom left corner (75’) to earn victory. The 26-year-old was substituted off shortly afterwards to the applause of his teammates. It was Austria’s third win in four in Group 1 of Division B in the Nations League. Schöpf and his teammates have nine points, the same tally as Norway.

Matondo stays top of the table

Rabbi Matondo was also celebrating at the final whistle; the Royal Blue won 1-0 with Wales in Bulgaria. He was introduced in the 54th minute in place of Daniel James. Jonathan Williams scored the only goal of the game in the 85th minute. The three points kept Wales top of Group 4 of Division B with ten points, ahead of Finland with nine points.

Turkey draw

The match between Turkey and Serbia didn’t see any Royal Blues in action. Ahmed Kutucu was on the bench for the duration of the 2-2 draw in Istanbul, whilst Ozan Kabak was suspended after accumulating too many yellow cards.
