Record win for Weston McKennie and the USA at the Gold Cup

Two games, two wins: The USA National Team have secured their passage to the next stages of the Gold Cup with a game to spare, beating Trinidad and Tobago 6-0 in Cleveland on Sunday.

After an equal and balanced opening to the game, the USA grew into the game and took control, eventually taking the lead shortly before the break when Aaron Long fired home. In the second half, the tournament hosts had a number of chances to extend their lead, but it wasn’t until the 66th minute that they doubled their lead thanks to Gyasi Zardes. It was then that the floodgates opened, with the US scoring four more goals before the full-time whistle, as Long and Zardes doubled their goal tallies for the evening, while Christian Pulisic and Paul Arriola also got on the score sheet.

Long’s 90th minute strike to make it 6-0 secured the USA’s biggest-ever win at the Gold Cup. The final goal came thanks to a powerful shot from Weston McKennie, a strike that the opposition goalkeeper wasn’t able to hold onto, allowing Long to pounce on the rebound. McKennie played the full 90 minutes.

America find themselves top of the group after two games, with two wins, ten goals scored and none conceded, ahead of Panama on goal difference. Both teams face each other on Thursday, knowing that a win would secure their status as group winners. Kickoff in Kansas City is at 03:00 CEST.
