Schöpf and Rönnow: Narrow defeat and a tight draw

With the European Championship right around the corner, teams are currently warming up with some international friendlies. Alessandro Schöpf and Austria faced England on Wednesday evening (02.06) while Frederik Rönnow’s Denmark took on Germany.

Schöpf with the chance to equalise

Austria, led by head coach Franco Foda, travelled to Middlesbrough to face the Three Lions in their penultimate friendly before the tournament gets underway. Alessandro Schöpf was named on the bench. In front of 8,750 fans, England took the upper hand in the first half and there were good chances for Trent-Alexander Arnold (4’) and Harry Kane (30’). The hosts kept the pressure on in the second 45 and were rewarded with the opening goal for Bukayo Saka (56’). Schöpf replaced David Alaba in the 71st minute and had Austria’s best chance to equalise shortly before the end. England, however, were able to clear the ball off the line to see out the game at 1-0.

Draw with Germany

Denmark took on Germany in Innsbruck with Frederik Rönnow remaining an unused substitute. Kasper Schmeichel is Denmark’s clear number one and played the full 90 minutes. The match was even to begin with before Jogi Löw’s team began to crank up the pressure. The game remained goalless at the break. Germany picked up where they left off and there was a quick opening goal for Florian Neuhaus (48’) to start the second half. Denmark reacted and began to attack with more intent. They were rewarded for their efforts with an equaliser for Yussuf Poulsen (71’). There were no further goals and the game ended 1-1.
