Six S04 players called up for internationals

In the first international break of the year, there will be qualifiers for the 2020 Euros and the African Cup of Nations. Several Schalke players have been called up to their respective countries.

Breel Embolo

Breel Embolo will be with Switzerland as they take on Georgia on Saturday (23/03/19) in a Euros qualifier. Their second game will be played at home on Tuesday (26/03/19) against Denmark. The game will be special for Embolo as it will be played at his old club’s stadium; Basel. Yevhen Konoplyanka and Ukraine will play their first game on Friday (22/03/19) against the reigning champions Portugal. They will then face Luxembourg on Monday (25/03/19). Rabbi Matondo and Wales will take on Slovakia on Sunday (24/03/19). Four days later, Wales will play against Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly.

Burgstaller and Harit unavailable

Burgstaller would have played with Austria in their games against Poland (21/03/19) and Israel (24/03/19). However, the 29-year-old has been struggling with his fitness recently and now has to undergo some dental surgery. Burgstaller had to complete training under the use of painkillers. Amine Harit will also be unavailable for Morocco in their AFCON qualifier on Friday. The midfielder left training, after tearing ligaments in his left ankle.

Hamza Mendyl meanwhile was called up to the Morocco U23s. The left-back will play two games against Congo twice. Salif Sané and Senegal, who have already qualified for the AFCON will finish their qualifying campaign with a game against Madagascar (23/03/29). They will then play a friendly against Mali on Tuesday (26/03/19). Weston McKennie and the USA will play two friendlies; against Ecuador (22/03/19) and Chile (27/03/19).

Two more players from Schalke 04 have been called up. Benjamin Goller will meet up with the Germany U20s who will face Portugal and Poland. Haji Wright will also play two games with the US U23s against Egypt (22/03/19) and the Netherlands (24/03/19).
