Matriciani and Krauß knocked out with Germany U21s after 2-0 defeat to England

Germany U21s lost their third group game at the European Championship on Wednesday (28/6). England ran out 2-0 winners in Batumi in Georgia. This means that Germany, who had Henning Matriciani and Tom Krauß in their side, finished bottom of Group C and are out of the tournament.

Matriciani and Krauß were named in Antonio Di Salvo’s starting XI, just as they both were for the 1-1 draw with Israel and the 2-1 defeat to Czech Republic. Matriciani, however, moved from centre-back to left-back for this encounter. He was taken off at half time by Di Salvo. Krauß, whose contract at Schalke runs out in two days, played the full 90 minutes in midfield. The 21-year-old therefore completed the full game twice in the tournament, having also come off after 45 minutes on one occasion.

Early lead for England

England took the lead in just the fourth minute thanks to Cameron Archer’s goal. Harvey Elliott doubled their advantage 17 minutes later and that was enough against a toothless Germany side.

England were comfortable after the break and held on for a third successive victory in Group C, leaving them with nine points from nine as they go into the quarter-finals full of confidence.
