Weston McKennie shines in defensive midfield for USA

In only his second senior appearance for the US Men’s National Team, Weston McKennie put in another strong performance. The 19-year-old started in the friendly against Bolivia as the only holding midfielder and helped his country to a 3-0 victory. He was also one of only five players to play the full 90 minutes.

The goals in Chester were scored by Walker Zimmerman (37‘), Josh Sargent (52‘) and Timothy Weah (59‘). McKennie and his US teammates now have two more international friendlies left to play, against Ireland on 2nd June and against France exactly a week after.

USA building for the future

The USA, who won’t be taking part in the World Cup in Russia this summer, are moving in a new direction after their failed qualification campaign. 15 of the 22 players named in the squad for their three friendlies are younger than 22-years-old. Dave Sarachan sees Schalke’s youngster as a key building block in his new youth movement.

McKennie made his debut for the USMNT against European Championship winners Portugal in November of last year, in which he scored a goal in their 1-1 draw.
