It was the midfielder’s first assist for his country. The host’s other goals were scored by Tyler Boyd (51’, 81’) and Gyasi Zardes (55’). McKennie played 74 minutes before being taken off.

Their next group game takes place on Sunday morning (23/6, 02:00 CEST) against Trinidad and Tobago, who lost their first game 2-0 to Panama.

Kenny doesn’t feature in last-minute defeat

New signing Jonjoe Kenny only watched on from the bench as England U21s lost their opening match at the U21 Euros.

The “Three Lions” slipped to a 2-1 defeat, despite leading until the 89th minute thanks to Phil Foden’s solo effort (54’). France, who had a man advantage, equalised through Jonathan Ikone before an own goal by Aaron Wan-Bissaka (95’) sealed them the victory. England’s next game is against Romania on Friday (21/6, 18:30 CEST) – a game that is of huge importance to them now, as only the three group winners and the best second-placed team will qualify for the semi-finals.
