World Cup over for Breel Embolo

Breel Embolo’s World Cup hopes came to an end on Tuesday, as he and and his Switzerland teammates lost to Sweden 1-0 in the last 16.

After a short trip back home to witness the birth of his new daughter Naliya, the Schalke striker returned to St. Petersburg to make an appearance from the bench.

Embolo was one of the most active players on the pitch when he came on in the 73rd minute, but he couldn’t quite cancel out Emil Forsberg’s opener (66’). Embolo’s best chance came ten minutes before the end of the game, although a combined effort from Emil Forsberg and Andreas Granqvist was enough to clear his header away from danger.

The 21-year-old now has the opportunity to spend some time with his family to help him get over the disappointment of the result. Just like all other Schalke players who have been involved in the World Cup, the forward will have a few weeks of holiday to recharge his batteries, before it’s back to training with the rest of his teammates in preparation for the new season.
