World Cup Qualifers: Sead Kolasinac makes cameo appearance

Sead Kolasinac’s Bosnia and Herzegovina national team started their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-2 draw in Finland. The Schalke captain was brought on towards the end of Wednesday night’s game in Helsinki. Malick Thiaw celebrated from the bench as his Germany U21 teammates beat Hungary 3-0 in their European Championship opener.

Sead Kolasinac

Finland and Bosnia-Herzegovina put on a show in Group D’s first game: Miralem Pjanic from FC Barcelona opened the scoring after 55 minutes for the visitors, but Finland’s Teemu Pukki equalised just three minutes later. The former Schalke man, now at Norwich City, added another in the 77th minute to make it 2-1. Miroslav Stevanovic had the final say and equalised in the 84th minute. Shortly before the full-time whistle, Sead Kolasinac made an appearance – he came on 60 seconds before full time to replace the goalscorer.

Before taking on reigning world champions France in their second qualifier next Wednesday (31 March, 20:45 CEST), Kolasinac and Co. have a friendly against Costa Rica on Saturday (kick-off 18:00 CET).

Thiaw yet to feature for U21s

Germany U21s enjoyed a winning start to their EURO campaign against hosts Hungary. Stefan Kuntz’s men won 3-0 thanks to goals from Lukas Nmecha and two from Ridle Baku. Malick Thiaw did not make an apperance, nor did Schalke loanee Markus Schubert, currently at Eintracht Frankfurt.

The German youngsters face rivals Netherlands in their second group game on Saturday, before rounding off the group stage against Romania on Tuesday. Both games will be broadcast live on free German TV (ProSieben).
