Yehven Konoplyanka scores in the UEFA Nations League
Three S04 players were active on international duty on Thursday 6th September, with all three winners. schalke04.de has summarised the evenings of Yehven Konoplyanka, Guido Burgstaller and Alessandro Schöpf.
Konoplyanka starts the comeback
Ukraine started the newly-founded UEFA Nations League with a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic. Yehven Konoplyanka’s side went 1-0 behind to Patrik Schick’s early effort in the first match in Group B1. However, Schalke’s number 11 equalised for his country just seconds before the half time whistle. The game petered out in the second half, and it looked as if both nations would be sharing the points until Oleksandr Zinchenko got a late winner for Ukraine. Their second game in the Nations League is against Slovakia on Sunday, September 9th.
Schalke duo celebrate 2-0 win over Sweden
Austria took on World cup quarter-finalists Sweden in a friendly, with Schalke duo Guido Burgstaller and Alessandro Schöpf both in the starting line-up. Burgstaller was involved in the opening goal, with his challenge with Filip Helander resulting in an own goal by the Swedish defender. Schöpf had a chance five minutes before half time, narrowly missing the chance for 2-0. David Alaba sealed the victory for Austria on 64 minutes, although both S04 players had been taken off by this point. Austria’s UEFA Nations League campaign begins on Tuesday, September 11th with a fixture in Bosnia & Herzegovina.
