Narrow defeat for Mauro Zalazar against the son of a former S04 captain
Mauro Zalazar and Uruguay lost their first game of the final stage of the South American U-20 Championship on Tuesday evening (4/2). Brazil won 1-0 at the Estadio Nacional Brígido.

Zalazar, who started each of Uruguay’s first three games at the tournament, was back in the side after being rested for the final game in Group A. After Zenit St. Petersburg’s Pedro put Brazil ahead in the 74th minute, Zalazar made way for another striker with 11 minutes left to play. The ‘Seleção’ took the lead despite having Arthur Dias of Athletico Paranaense sent off for two bookings (57’).
A name familiar to all Schalke fans was substituted on in the 83rd minute for Brazil: centre-back Filipe Bordon of Lazio, son of former S04 captain Marcelo Bordon, came on to help preserve his nation’s lead.
Uruguay’s next game in the final stage is against Argentina on Friday (7/2) at 23:30 CET. That is followed by matches with Chile (11/2), Paraguay (13/2) and Colombia (16/2). The nation which finishes the final stage with the most points will be crowned U-20 South American champions, while the top four teams will earn a place at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile later this year.
