Mauro Zalazar and Uruguay suffer defeat in goalfest at the South American U-20 Championship

Mauro Zalazar and his Uruguay team fell to another narrow defeat in the final stage of the South American U-20 Championship in Venezuela during the early hours of Saturday morning (8/2), following their 1-0 loss at the hands of Brazil. The ‘Celeste’ ended up on the wrong side of a goalfest against Argentina at the Estadio Nacional Brígido, with the game finishing 4-3.

Claudio Echeverri gave the ‘Albiceleste’ the lead on 38 minutes before completing his brace in stoppage time at the end of the first half (45+3’). Maher Carrizo made it 3-0 shortly after the restart (52’) and the striker also bagged the goal to hand Argentina their 4-1 advantage (69’).

Joaquín Lavega scored twice for Ururguay to bring them back to both 3-1 (60’) and 4-2 (74’), while Esteban Crucci made for a tense end to proceedings when he reduced the deficit to 4-3 in the 86th minute. However, an equaliser was ultimately not to arrive.

Zalazar was once again named in his side’s starting line-up before he was brought off in the 73rd minute.

The ‘Celeste’ next face Chile at 02:00 CET on Tuesday (11/2) due to the ‘everyone plays everyone’ competition format. Matches against Paraguay (13/2) and Columbia (16/2) are still to come. The nation which finishes the final stage with the most points will be crowned U-20 South American champions, while the top four teams will earn a place at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile later this year.
