Mauro Zalazar’s dreams of World Cup qualification remain alive after 1-1 draw with Chile

Mauro Zalazar once again started for Uruguay as they picked up their first point of the final stage of the South American U-20 Championship in Venezuela in the early hours of Tuesday (11/2). The Royal Blues’ number 16 played 67 minutes of the 1-1 draw with Chile before the midfielder was substituted off for Gonzalo Petit as his nation sought added attacking impetus.

Juan Rodriguez put the ‘Celeste’ 1-0 ahead shortly before the half-time at the Estadio Nacional Brígido Iriarte in Caracas before Chile levelled the game through Iván Román two minutes ahead of Zalazar’s withdrawal.

The final stage of the South American U-20 Championship comprises of a round-robin format with the ‘Celeste’ sitting second from bottom in the table after three of five matches. While Uruguay are now unable to top the group and win the tournament, there is still plenty to play for in their last two matches against Paraguay on Thursday (13/2) and Columbia on Sunday (16/2). This is because the top four teams will all progress to the U-20 World Cup, which is being held in Chile in the Autumn.
