Mauro Zalazar misses out on U20 World Cup after narrow defeat against Paraguay
Following a narrow 1-0 defeat against Paraguay, Mauro Zalazar and Uruguay 20s are now unable to finish amongst the top four in the final round of the South American U-20 Championships. Uruguay U20 had already been eliminated from contention to win the tournament prior to their match against Paraguay. The top four sides all qualify for the U20 World Cup in autumn, meaning that the ‘Celeste’ will now not be able to take part.
Zalazar started once again in what was his seventh appearance of the tournament. The 19-year-old was then subbed off in the 65th minute, after defender Gadiel Paoli had scored the winning goal for Paraguay in the 52nd minute.
Despite managing 18 shots and far more possession than their opponents, Uruguay were unable to find their way back into the game. The win took Paraguay onto six points, five more than the Celeste.
Their final match of the tournament will see them come up against Colombia on Sunday (16/2).
