Mauro Zalazar and Uruguay open U-20 South American Championship with last-minute win

Mauro Zalazar is currently away taking part in the 2025 South American U-20 Championship in Venezuela, with Uruguay U20s opening the tournament with a 2-1 win against Chile on Saturday (25/1).

Uruguay benefitted from an own goal from Chile’s Juan Francisco Rossel in the sixth minute of injury time that handed them all three points in Cabudare.

Renzo Machado had put Uruguay ahead in the eighth minute, before Emilio Aviles restored parity just eight minutes later. Zalazar started and was then taken off in the 84th minute.

The South American U-20 Championship is taking place from 23rd January to 16th February. Uruguay will come up against Paraguay, Peru and hosts Venezuela in their remaining group stage matches. The top three sides from Groups A and B will qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. The final rounds will not only determine the winner of the tournament, but also the four teams that will qualify for the upcoming U20 World Cup in Chile from 27th September to 19th October.
