Alexander Schwolow: I want to support the team well from the back

After just a few days at Schalke, the new man between the posts already feels right at home. “It's really fun to be able to be out on the pitch with the boys,” says Alexander Schwolow, who feels very well received by his new teammates, the coaching staff and the rest of the club. The 30-year-old is also excited by the ‘fantastic’ VELTINS Arena.

Schwolow has a lot of anticipation for his first game at the club’s home ground. He’s experienced the atmosphere as an away player during his time with Hertha BSC and SC Freiburg. “It was always impressive,” said he goalkeeper on the ‘twelfth man’ in the stands.

A Schalker at the second attempt

The goalkeeper almost signed for S04 two years ago. “We were very close to a transfer in summer 2020,” said Schwolow. “Unfortunately it didn’t work out for a number of reasons, so I’m all the happier that I’m a Schalke player at the second attempt.“

Schwolow had already been in contact with Simon Henzler back then, and the on-loan goalkeeper is convinced by the first few training sessions under his now goalkeeping coach. “His training is very varied,” said the 30-year-old, who feels he is in good hands within the goalkeeping group.

On what he demands of himself, Schwolow wants “to give my all in every training session so that I can be a good support for the team from the back”. In addition to his footballing ability, the goalkeeper also wants to bring experience. “I’ve been through a lot in my career and have also had to overcome some difficult situations,” said the keeper. “Nothing can knock me down anymore.”

Despite a muscle injury ruling Schwolow out of the season run-in which saw Hertha secure Bundesliga survival in the play-off against Hamburger SV, the goalkeeper is now injury free. “I am fit again and have no more problems,” said the goalkeeper.
