Bastian Oczipka: We will carry on doing things our way
There were a number of disappointed faces after Schalke’s defeat to FC Bayern on Saturday evening (24/8), however Bastian Oczipka quickly find reasons to be positive after the game. The left back spoke with schalke04.de about the reasons for the defeat, good things to take from the match and the fans’ reaction after the game.
Bastian, 3-0 sounds like a fairly heavy defeat…
The result is very clear and convincing. We are obviously disappointed, but I think we were able to leave the pitch with our heads held high. The goals were annoying ones to concede, especially the penalty and the free kick. The second goal came at a time when we were playing well too.
Everything has to go your way if you want to get any points against Bayern.
Definitely. Certain moments against them must favour you. An example would be Robert Lewandowski’s free kick. That needed to hit the wall or go over and we then we could have used our chances better.
There were also several controversial referring decisions.
In my opinion we should have had two penalties. We informed the referee that Perisic had handled the ball from Daniel Caligiuri’s free kick, and he wanted to check it but unfortunately didn’t change his mind. It’s pretty difficult against Bayern if those kinds of things don’t go your way.
The fans’ reaction after the final whistle showed that they were pleased with our efforts.
Despite all that, the record champions deserved the win. What does the team need to improve on?
We lacked a bit of confidence in the first half. We should have been better on the ball and attacked them more – just as we did in the second period. Obviously not everything we have done so far is positive, but it’s clear that we are playing aggressively and setting the opponents under pressure early on.
It’s been a difficult start to the season having faced two sides who are playing European football this year. What is the mood in the camp like ahead of the coming weeks?
The coach said that we need to carry on doing things our way, which we will. We have fought hard and ran plenty of miles too. The fans’ reaction after the final whistle showed that they were pleased with our efforts. That’s really important and is a great feeling. We will continue to improve and start winning games again.
