Mark Uth: "It makes you hungry for more"

Mark, it was already clear during the opening training session last week that the fans really like you. How did you experience that first contact with the Royal Blues?

It was a really wonderful experience to see so many fans at the first training. I signed a few autographs, we took a few selfies. It makes you hungry for more.

Mark, it was already clear during the opening training session last week that the fans really like you. How did you experience that first contact with the Royal Blues?

When such a big club comes in for you, it’s special. For that reason, I made my decision very quickly after some a really positive chat with Domenico Tedesco.

What did you talk about?

He told me very directly that the club was had a very big interest in me and that they would do everything to sign me. That really impressed me. Of course, he also discussed a few tactical things with me. Where he sees me, where he wants to work with me. Then I sat down with my family and agent and said that I wanted to join.

What goals have you set yourself?

Back when I played in the Netherlands, I made the mistake of opening my mouth a bit too wide (laughs). So I’ll stay quiet this time. I just want to be important for the team and be involved in as many goals as possible.

Due to your consistent performances in the last season, your name was often mentioned in discussions about potential strikers for the Germany national team. Are you hoping that good performances with Schalke will earn you a call-up?

I’ve always emphasised that you cannot hope for something like that. It’s an incredible bonus to be able to play for your country. Of course it would be a huge honour for me. I would be absolutely delighted to be able to play for Germany some day. But to try and force it now, in whatever way, is the wrong approach. Now I’m going to try and settle at Schalke, start the season well and then we’ll see what may or may not happen.

There are six Champions League games to look forward to in the first half of the season. Last season you narrowly missed out on qualification in a playoff against eventual finalists Liverpool.

Playing against Liverpool at Anfield was something special. Looking at the potential pots for next season, there’s a chance of a real cracker. I’m excited to see where the journey takes us.
