Suat Serdar: When the team plays well, everyone plays even better

Suat Serdar netted his fourth goal of the season against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday. The 22-year-old speaks about the frustrating draw against Fortuna, his performances so far this season and receiving another call-up to the German national team.

Suat Serdar

Suat, the game against Fortuna Düsseldorf was a roller coaster of emotions; you took the lead three times but only came out with a point. What are your thoughts on the 3-3 draw?
It’s very frustrating that we conceded right at the end of the game. The draw feels like a loss. When I made it 3-2 it felt like it would be the winning goal.

You’ve now scored four goals in just eight games. Why have you become such a goal threat?
When the team plays well, it makes everyone play even better. But ultimately it’s not important who scores the goals. We’ve improved a lot as a team after a disappointing last season. I think that’s clear for everyone to see.

We’re one third through the season and the table is very tight. You now sit in seventh place on 19 points, but are still just two points away from second.
We can be proud of how we’ve performed so far this season. But we also know we could have had even more points. I’m not just talking about the draw against Düsseldorf.  We also dropped points against Köln when we conceded in added time, and perhaps the goalless draw in the derby aswell. On the other hand, we already have more points than we did after the entire Hinrunde last season.

It’s a great honour for me to be a part of the national team

You have been called up by Joachim Löw for the upcoming European qualifiers against Belarus and Northern Ireland. What does it mean to you to play for Germany?
It’s a great honour for me to be a part of the national team. It’s a dream come true. I’d like to say a huge thank you to the coach, the staff and the players. They’ve all been a massive help and have played a big part in me being called-up again.

After the international break you are back in Bundesliga action away at Werder Bremen. What do you make of the Green-Whites?
Bremen have a fantastic team, despite being in the bottom half of the table. I’m expecting a difficult game but at the same time I’m confident that we can win the three points. We’ve done really well away from home so far this season.
