Victor Pálsson: The applause showed that the fans haven’t forgotten me
A member of Schalke’s promotion-winning team of 2021/22 returned to the VELTINS-Arena on Saturday. Victor Pálsson, now of KAS Eupen, was applauded by the fans at the friendly, where he came across a number of old friends. schalke04.de spoke to the Icelandic midfielder after the game to discuss the 90 minutes, his connection to the club and his current sporting situation.
Victor, you were given a fantastic reception by the fans as you came out to warm up before the game? How did that feel?
The Schalke fans are amazing. Their applause showed me that they haven’t forgotten me. Coming into the stadium was a bit like returning home for me. Even though I only played here for a year, it was an incredibly intense and emotional time.
What went through your head during that moment?
The last time I actually played at the VELTINS-Arena was when we secured promotion against FC St. Pauli. It still feels like that happened yesterday. Playing here again was a nice feeling and it was good to see so many familiar faces as well. I’ve got a lot of unforgettable memories together with a lot of the players and staff members here.
Are you still in regular contact with any of your former teammates?
Yes, with quite a few of them: Simon Terodde, Thomas Ouwejan, Michael Langer, Dominick Drexler, Cedric Brunner and Danny Latza. I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone! We like to regularly meet up too if can we find the time.
Coming into the stadium was a bit like returning home for me.
How was the game against your former teammates?
To be honest, I was a bit nervous before the game. That was perhaps noticeable with my first two touches that were a bit sloppy. I was focused after that though and played my own game. There were a few comments at times between me and Blendi, Thomas and Domme (laughs).
Do you still follow Schalke’s progress from afar?
Of course. I watch every game I can on TV. I’ll watch the highlights if I’m playing at the same time.
Just like Schalke, your side returns to competitive action next weekend. How happy are you with your team’s performance today?
The result is disappointing. As a KAS Eupen player, I’d obviously hoped for a different result today. Our first half of the season didn’t go too well. We’re in a relegation battle and need to work hard. I’m confident that we’ll collect enough points to stay up. Every single game is important to us.
