Schalke 04 to streamline scouting and academy structures following review

Following the end of the summer transfer window, board member for sport Frank Baumann carried out a thorough review of his areas of responsibility. Based on his findings, the club’s board has decided to make structural adjustments to scouting, recruitment and the Knappenschmiede.

Matthias Tillmann: We had clear criteria when searching for a new coach

In a selection process with several candidates, Kees van Wonderen ultimately came out on top when the club were looking for a new head coach. “There were several really good candidates when it came to their tactics and skills, but you ultimately need someone that will connect with the team and get them behind them and their ideas,” said Matthias Tillmann, who believes that the new head coach will do just that.

Ben Manga: Scouting is all about the little things

Former Schalke president Günter Siebert was known for his knack of spotting gems. Ben Manga also fits this description, as well as being renowned for his ability to find hidden talent and up-and-coming players. He is simply an all-rounder. The new director of squad planning, scouting and the Knappenschmiede youth academy is not a fan of these buzzwords, but is making the best of them.

Ben Manga joins FC Schalke 04

The Royal Blues have bolstered their sporting management team with the addition of Ben Manga, who has become the new director of squad planning, scouting and the Knappenschmiede youth academy. Manga has signed a long-term contract at the club and will be responsible for Schalke’s senior and youth teams alongside sporting director Marc Wilmots with immediate effect. Both Manga and Wilmots will report directly to Schalke CEO, Matthias Tillmann.
