Alexander Nübel named new Royal Blues captain

On the final day of the pre-season training camp in the Austrian alpine town of Mittersill, Royal Blues head coach David Wagner announced FC Schalke 04’s new captain for the forthcoming 2019/20 season. The American head coach has appointed goalkeeper Alexander Nübel as club captain. The 22 year-old will be assisted by two vice-captains: Benjamin Stambouli and Omar Mascarell.

“I’m delighted that the three players will lead the team this season. I believe our team is in very good hands,” praised Wagner. “Social competence, knowledge of the sport and club experience” were key factors in Wagner’s decision.

We openly discuss matters with everyone in the team and we speak with each other constantly. In this respect, there were a lot of options for this decision.

Alongside Nübel, who joined Schalke in 2015, and vice-captains Stambouli and Mascarell, two other players will join the team committee for the 2019/20 season. These two players will be elected by the team in the near future.
