Benedikt Höwedes transfers to Lokomotiv Moscow

He has left lasting footprints in the history of FC Schalke 04, and now he is starting a new chapter in his career - Benedikt Höwedes has signed for Lokomotiv Moscow. The centre back has signed a four-year deal with the current Russian champions until 2022. In Jefferson Farfan and sporting director Erik Stoffelshaus, he’ll unite with two other former Royal Blue representatives.

“Last summer, Benedikt Höwedes looked for a new challenge at Juventus,” explained sporting director Christian Heidel. “We wish him only the absolute best for this new sporting chapter in his career at Lokomotiv Moscow, who performed terrifically last season.”

U19s Champion, DFB Pokal winner, World Champion

Enjoy some of the most important dates and facts about Höwedes‘ Royal Blue career: in 2001, he moved to the S04 youth system. Five years later in 2006, the defender was part of the Schalke U19s that won the German championship. In the same year, he also signed his first professional contract. In 2011, he won the DFB Pokal, a triumph which included a notable 5-0 win in the final against MSV Duisburg. In 2014, he won the World Cup with Germany, contesting every minute of Die Mannschaft’s World Cup run at left-back. He has 240 Bundesliga games to his name (12 goals) and has played 27 times in the DFB Pokal (5 goals) for the Royal Blues. Höwedes also racked up 66 appearances in European cups with S04 – more than any other player. The defender proudly wore the Royal Blue captain’s armband between 2011 and 2017.
