„We’re really happy that Benji is staying at Schalke. It goes without saying that he is an excellent footballer. But his value extends well beyond the football pitch,“ said head of sport Jochen Schneider. „Benji is a leader who carries a lot of respect in the dressing room. He lives and breaths this club and its values.“

For Stambouli, staying in Gelsenkirchen was also a matter close to his heart: „I’m really happy to continue playing with Schalke. Everyone knows how close I hold the club, and especially the fans, to my heart. Now we will do everything to have a good season.“

Head coach David Wagner is also delighted by the extension. „Benji is an extremely important factor, on and off the pitch. Even during his long spell on the sidelines, he was a pillar of stability within the team. I’m delighted to continue working with him. Unfortunately, he only made nine appearances in the league last season, which makes him all the more motivated to finally return to the pitch for Schalke.“

Stambouli joined Schalke from Paris St. Germain in 2016. He was initially employed as a defensive midfielder, before gradually shifting back and impressing in central defence in both a back three and four. Stambouli has made 106 competitive appearances to date, scoring four goals.
