The role was previously held by Peter Peters, who left the club on the 30th June 2020. Ruhl-Hamers, a 44-year-old business graduate, accountant and auditor, has already been working with FC Schalke 04 since 2010.

“During our search for a new finance director, it was important for us to find somebody not only with great expertise, but also with good people skills,” said Dr. Jens Buchta, chair of the supervisory board for S04. “Christina Rühl-Hamers meets these criteria perfectly and we are totally convinced that she is the best option to complete the board of directors.”

The club received applications to the role from a wide range of successful business leaders in Germany and beyond. The total number of applications reached triple figures. An expanded commission worked tirelessly on behalf of the supervisory committee to help with the process.

Working together with Alexander Jobst and Jochen Schneider, I want to do everything I can to secure the economic future of our club.

“I am obviously really pleased to have the backing of the supervisory committee as I take on the job as director of finance, personnel and legal matters. I am also aware of the challenges that lie ahead,” said Christina Rühl-Hamers. “In cooperation with Alexander Jobst and Jochen Schneider, I want to do everything I can to secure the economic future of our club. I’m really excited to see our plans take shape.”

Rühl-Hamers is not only the first woman to be named in a directorial financial role for a Bundesliga club, but she is also more than just a businesswoman. Before her career as a striker was ended by injury, she had played in the Women’s Bundesliga and had represented the national team at youth level.
