“Capturing Dries’ signature is further proof that, even in Bundesliga 2, Schalke 04 still carries huge appeal for young players with great potential,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder. “With his footballing ability, his physicality and his character, Dries has everything you need to play a key role in our team. We’re delighted that he will strengthen our options at centre-back.”

“It’s a huge honour to now be a part of Schalke 04,” said Wouters. “This club has a great past, and my goal is to help write a new chapter in its long history. I can’t wait to take to the pitch and get going.”

The left-footed centre-back joined Genk as a nine-year-old and worked his way through their youth teams, before making his Jupiler Pro League debut at 19 in a 2-1 win over KV Oostende in 2016. Wouters featured a total of 66 times in all competitions for the four-time Belgian champions.
