Defender Thomas Ouwejan joins Schalke

FC Schalke 04 have signed defender Thomas Ouwejan on loan for the 2021/22 season, including an option to buy. The left-back spent last season at Udinese in Serie A, making 15 appearances after joining in September 2020 on a temporary deal from parent club AZ Alkmaar.

“Thomas Ouwejan is a young, dynamic player, who, at just 24, has a lot of experience already. He was previously a regular for AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie and proved his quality in Serie A last season,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder on the new signing, who can play in defence and also on the left-hand side of midfield. “We’re happy that Thomas has chosen to join us. His style of play and set pieces will improve us as a team.”

Ouwejan commented: “The conversations with FC Schalke 04 went really well and just confirmed what I already thought. I am massively excited for this challenge, which will definitely be tough, and I’m looking forward to wearing Royal Blue very soon.”

The man from the Netherlands came through AZ Alkmaar’s youth academy, breaking into the first team in 2015. He has played 81 times in the Eredivisie, scoring two goals and registering 12 assists. Ouwejan has also appeared 10 times in the Europa League with AZ.
