Murkin played 54 2. Bundesliga games and three DFB-Pokal fixtures for the Knappen, scoring one goal. “Derry will play in the Eredivisie and the Europa League with Utrecht next season. He didn’t want to extend his contract at Schalke so we had to make a decision on his with a year left on his contract. Considering his age, contract length and market value, we are happy with the financial terms of this transfer. We would like to thank Derry for his time at Schalke and wish him all the best for his future, both on and off the pitch,” explained Youri Mulder, director for professional football.

Murkin arrived in Gelsenkirchen in summer 2023 from FC Volendam in the Netherlands. The 25-year-old from England had previously played for several academy sides in the Netherlands.
