Dominick Drexler to become assistant coach of Schalke’s U17s
Following the end of his career as a professional footballer in the summer, Dominick Drexler will take on the role of assistant coach for Schalke’s U17 side, currently led by head coach Charles Takyi. Drexler will undertake internships both at and away from the club before the summer, with his new role effective as of the 2025/26 season. His new contract will run for two years, as agreed when he last signed a contract extension as a player.

“Dominick and I had really good and open conversations. We discussed things that happened in the past and put them behind us. We were both keen to look to the future. We came up with a plan that Dominick was interested in and it’s one that will give us the opportunity to have the experience of a long-time first-team player in our academy to help with the development of our youngsters. This move makes the most sense for both parties,” explained Matthias Tillmann, FC Schalke 04’s CEO.
“I am really grateful that the positive discussions with the club’s bosses – Matthias Tillmann, Ben Manga and Raffael Tonello – resulted in a clear definition of my new role after the conclusion of my playing career. Everybody who knows me knows that I have always given my best for this club. Even after I was suspended by Karel Geraerts, which wasn’t an easy time for me, I still behaved in a professional and correct manner. People already knew that I started doing my coaching badges quite early on, so now being a part of the Knappenschmiede and Charles Tayki’s coaching team is a true privilege. I can not only start to gain experience as a coach, but also continue to further my education,” commented Dominick Drexler.
Dominick will get the chance to work with a team full of ambitious players with our U17s.
Raffael Tonello, head of the academy and the club’s head youth scout, added: “Dominick experienced a lot at several different clubs during his years as a professional footballer and obviously played under a number of coaches. We want to support him as he looks to complete the necessary coaching courses along the way. At the same time, he will get the chance to work with a team full of ambitious players with our U17s.”
Dominick Drexler’s playing career will come to an end this summer. The 34-year-old played over 400 games in professional football, having a hand in over 100 goals for FC Schalke 04, 1. FC Köln, Holstein Kiel, VfR Aalen, SpVgg Greuther Fürth and Rot-Weiß Erfurt. Some of the highlights of his career included promotion to the Bundesliga with the Royal Blues in 2022 and with 1. FC Köln in 2019, as well as promotion to the second division with Holstein Kiel in 2017.
