FC Schalke 04 sign Markus Schubert

In Suat Serdar and Alexander Nübel, the Royal Blues previously had two U21 European Championship runners-up in their ranks. Now, with the signing of Markus Schubert for an undisclosed fee, that number has risen to three. The goalkeeper, whose contract at Dynamo Dresden expired on 30th June, was also part of the Germany squad in the recent U21 European Championship in Italy and San Marino. Schubert has signed a four-year-long contract until 30th June 2023.

“We’re very happy to have signed an exceptional goalkeeping talent in Markus Schubert,” said sporting director Jochen Schneider. “An important factor in Markus’ signing was goalkeeping coach Simon Henzler’s judgement, who thinks very highly of him.”

The 21-year-old had this to say about his new challenge: “I’m absolutely convinced that I can make the next step here and I made my decision very wilfully after talking with plenty of people. I had great talks with the board, and goalkeeping coach Simon Henzler excited me with his training ideas. I associate Schalke 04 with excellent fans, passion, ambition and honest work, all of which I can identify with 100%. I’ll give my all to be successful at Schalke 04 and am really looking forward to the task ahead.”

After playing for SV Lok Nossen (2004-2008) and SC Riesa (2008-2011), Schubert joined the Dresden youth setup aged 13. The custodian went on to play first team football for the club, making 40 2. Bundesliga appearances and playing twice in the DFB-Pokal. At international level, the 1.86 metre tall keeper has progressed from U17 to U21 level for Germany.
