FC Schalke 04 take Yaroslav Mikhailov on loan

Yaroslav Mikhailov has joined Schalke on a season-long loan. The Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder has been training with the club for the last three weeks and his efforts have persuaded the Schalke coaches to keep him in Gelsenkirchen.

“That Yaroslav Mikhailov has integrated so well into the team during his trial period, and that he has taken on the competition for places with visible enthusiasm – that wasn’t necessarily expected given his age and his new surroundings,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder on the ninth signing of the summer. “So we are even happier that he will now be a part of our squad for the season to come. He has a creative element to his game that will drive us forward and improve our game on the whole.”

The 18-year-old is really excited looking ahead to the coming months: “That these few days will now become a year – I hadn’t really expected that to begin with. I’m really grateful to those here at Schalke for giving me this opportunity and I will do everything I can to play my part in a successful season.”

The midfielder joined the Zenit academy as a nine-year-old back in 2012 and was recognised as the club’s best youth midfielder in 2019. Last season, Mikhailov featured 25 times for the Russian champions’ youth sides. The attack-minded youngster has also represented his country five times at youth level.
