Florian Flick signs contract extension until 2024

Two weeks after the end of the transfer window, the Royal Blues can announce another decision for the future. Florian Flick has signed a contract extension until 30th June 2024. The midfielder’s previous contract was due to expire at the end of the 2022/23 season.

“Our aim is to keep talented players like Florian here and develop them carefully. He has an undoubted potential and was able to get his first taste of Bundesliga football last season,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder. “This season, he has already demonstrated why he justifiably made the step up from the U23s squad to the first team. He just has to continue working hard and push himself for more appearances.”

The 21-year-old said, “Schalke gave me the opportunity to take the step from the fourth tier to the Bundesliga. I’m very grateful to the club for that. I’ll do everything I can to get us back to the top flight.”

Florian Flick joined Waldhof Mannheim as a 15-year-old, where he moved through the youth set-up before making his debut with the first team in 2018. In summer 2020, Flick made the move from the third-division side to join Schalke U23s, a year before making the jump up to the first-team squad. Overall, the midfielder has made four appearances in the Bundesliga, scoring one goal. This season, Flick has played 15 games in the second division.
