Guido Burgstaller: We were greedy for a lot of goals
After an expected convincing S04 victory over Stadtauswahl Bottrop, a team made up of players exclusively from the seventh, eighth and ninth tiers, on Friday evening (12/07), David Wagner was pleased with his team’s performance which saw the Royal Blues run out 20-1 winners.
“We played with a high tempo, which I really liked. The result wasn’t the important thing,” said the 47 year old on the game at the sold-out Bottroper Jahnstadion in front of 4,000 supporters. “We didn’t just want to play the game, but we had a huge appetite, even against such an opponent,” said Wagner, who led the Royal Blues for the second time.
Successful test with impressive goals
The top scorer of the game was Guido Burgstaller, who found the back of the net six times. “I enjoyed myself,” said the Austrian, who was also pleased with his side’s performance. “We did well overall and were greedy for a lot of goals. There were a few nice goals among them – it was a good friendly,” said the 30 year old.
Wagner’s coaching team were looking for certain things in attack, said Burgstaller. “We wanted to go forward with pace and win possession back as soon as possible,” explained the attacker, who also acknowledged, “we know that not everything went perfectly, especially considering the amount of training sessions recently.”
For Burgstaller, the victory should help to build self confidence and also provided a chance to put things from the training ground into practice. The striker sees positives in the team’s speed in attack, the willingness to go forward and the team’s ability to put away chances.
We will go again and want to give a better showing of ourselves.
Looking ahead to the new season, the 30 year old says that the Royal Blues want to pick up from the 17/18 season. “We want to return to the top six,” said Burgstaller, who also claimed that “gossip” will mean nothing and it is only what happens on the pitch that matters. “We have to forget last season. We will go again and want to give a better showing of ourselves.”
